The Spirit Seeker | Experiences in Growth Through Grace The Spirit Seeker Skip to content Home Hello! Uncategorized Some thoughts on God ← Older posts by Sara | July 9, 2016 · 9:23 pm Disturbing the Silence Photo courtesy of Bryan Edman The past few days the news has been overflowing with coverage of more violence in our country. It almost feels as if the tension that has been building up has burst, and the pain of the country is palpable. Sadly, while writing that sentence my thought was, “I hope it is palpable to more than just some of us.” We seem to be at a boiling point for fear, pain and hate; but a part of me fears that it still has a long way to go before it will finally start to get better. Yet another part of me has started to feel something shift, as suddenly I started hearing the trickle of voices say “We must love.” It is the message I too have tried to convey so many times, only to find myself so easily distracted by the anger and injustice all around me. Before I know it, my contribution at times has been the opposite of the message of love. So many times I have felt so justified in my anger that it almost seems holy to act on it. It is not. It is anger, and anger, as they say, is like throwing rocks at a wasp nest. Today though, people are sad. And some of those voices I hear calling for love are the same ones I have in the past heard shout out in anger and hate. I, apparently, am not the only one easily distracted from my message. A shift is happening, it may just be a rumble, but a shift is happening. With all of the messages of love I have heard and read today, I am aware of how often I have silenced myself from spreading this message. How many times have I worried that the people raising their voices in anger will spit on my message if I spread it? Too many to count. How many others are out there like me, who can see the root cause of our chaos but are too afraid to raise their voices? Then, in one of those moments that feel intentional, the group Disturbed’s cover of “The Sound of Silence” came on the radio. Wow. If you haven’t heard it, you must go listen. It says so much about what I have been doing and what I believe others have been doing as well. We have stopped ourselves from sharing our songs for fear of disturbing the silence. We must disturb the silence. We must allow love to speak louder than hate. Love is uniting, I believe this. What I am just starting to figure out is that it is also bigger than any of the other energies it might come up against in ways I haven’t considered before. I have shied away at times from bringing up love when the pain of one group or another comes to the surface. I have thought this would be seen as trite and dismissive of their pain, or have feared the anger that arises from that pain. I am learning though that in order for diverse groups to find unity, they must have a common cause. Not common perspectives or understandings, not common situations in life, not even common opinions. A common cause. For example, if religions had the common cause of worshipping God, instead of in proving they are the holders of truth, then we might see a lot less hatred over all things religious. Perhaps love can likewise be the common goal we share. I believe most people are seeking love in their lives. We want goodness and beauty. We are angry because it doesn’t always seem to be present in our lives, and we want to blame someone else for this. The truth is, love is a seedling within each of us that must be nourished to grow, it doesn’t come fully formed. If we aren’t seeing it, we need to grow it. We cannot wait for someone else to let go of hate – we must act in love in all we do. Every time we choose to do otherwise, when we blame another to justify the acting out of our fear, we are actually participating in the hate we so often cry out against. When we see the scary things in the world, we must see with eyes of compassion and wisdom instead of fear. We must plant the seeds of love and nurture them, pulling the weeds of hate when they grow in our heart as much as we can. Our voices must be louder than those invested in the growing of hate. Our opinions may be wrong, or half wrong, or completely right. It really doesn’t matter. If the motivation behind them is love, we will just be contributing to the larger conversation and our answers to these problems will start to present themselves because the meaning attached to that love has value. If someone tries to understand us with love, even though they don’t “get it”, accept the love. Let them share their meaning. You see, we all have the truth. The greatest misconception of all time is that some hold the truth while others don’t. Truth is the living, dynamic growth of meaning that takes place within each of us as we interact with the world around us. As we share it with others, it becomes the growth of meaning that takes place as a whole. Truth is how we have become a better society than those who roamed the earth 2000 years ago, and how they were better than those 2000 years before them. We have shared our meanings and continued to develop a deeper understanding of goodness over time. The more we can become aware of this, the more we can consciously participate in it. We don’t need to prove each other wrong or at fault, we just need to realize that another’s truth can contribute to this thing that is bigger than any one of us alone. Love will guide us there, I am sure of it. Therefore, I must disturb the silence. “The Sound Of Silence” Simon and Garfunkel Hello darkness, my old friend I’ve come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone ‘Neath the halo of a streetlamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share No one dare Disturb the sound of silence “Fools” said I, “You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you” But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said “The words of the prophets Are written on subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence” Leave a Comment Filed under Uncategorized by Sara | July 6, 2016 · 5:35 am Bumbling Through It When I was really young we still had an old “merc” (mercantile), where we would go to buy our groceries up until the time the place had to close because the butcher block couldn’t keep up with modern standa...
